WHITERIVER — In a process that has taken most of the past decade, The White Mountain Apache Tribe is one step closer toward implementation of its rural water system.

With the help of Congressman Tom O’Halleran, a bill known as SB 140 was approved Jan. 11 that allows the tribe to use settlement funds from the WMAT Water Rights Quantification Act of 2010 to cover any possible cost overruns for construction of the Miner Flat Dam and an accompanying rural water system project.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) blasted President Donald Trump’s decision to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments, calling the move shortsighted and detrimental to ongoing conservation efforts and the preservation of Native American history. Five area Native American tribes supported the designation of Bears Ears, including the Hopi and Navajo Nation, both of which Congressman O’Halleran represents in Congress.

Late last week, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01), whose District includes much of the Grand Canyon National Park, sent a letter signed by Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03), Ruben Gallego (AZ-07), and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-09) urging President Donald Trump to not modify Public Land Order Number 7787, the 20-year ban on new uranium mining projects in the Grand Canyon Watershed.

In a November, 1st announcement, the U.S. Forest Service announced its recommendation to revise the mining ban and allow mining operations to begin on previously withdrawn land.

The Interior Department has proposed more than doubling entrance fees at the Grand Canyon and several other national parks throughout the country. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, 90 members of Congress sent a letter this week to Secretary Ryan Zinke condemning the proposal.

The group of Democrats calls the plan misguided, and says the fee increase will make public lands inaccessible to lower-income and working families. They also worry the plan would threaten the economies of communities near national parks, where visitors spent $18.4 billion  last year.

This bipartisan legislation creates a joint farm equipment sharing pilot program between the Department of Defense (DOD) and new and beginning farmers with guidance from the Department of Agriculture (USDA).
