WASHINGTON—Today, following reports that an American family living in Sonora, Mexico was ambushed and murdered, Congressman O’Halleran (AZ-01) issued the following statement:

“My heart breaks for those involved in yesterday’s senseless acts of violence in Sonora. As a former law enforcement officer that dealt directly with gang crimes and violence, I know the circumstances these groups take advantage of to establish control of an area. These include a lack of both proper law enforcement and an effective judicial system, as well as deep and prevalent corruption.

“Today, I am calling on Mexican authorities to hold accountable those responsible for these heinous crimes and to crack down on cartels to prevent tragedies such as this from ever occurring again. There is absolutely no reason the lives of innocent American children, some as young as one year old, should be lost to this kind of hateful act. The Mexican government needs to overhaul the way they react to these issues immediately and do everything in their power to fix the systems in place that have allowed these groups to flourish.”

Reports indicate that three women and six children were killed, two of which were only four months old.
