Press Release

WASHINGTON — Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had awarded a grant of over $1 million to support Head Start programs for the White Mountain Apache Tribe.

“Last year, Head Start and Early Head Start programs provided essential support and services for over 19,000 families in Arizona,” said O’Halleran. “This year, as we work to address COVID-19, we must honor tribal sovereignty and ensure Native Nations are empowered to make the right decisions for education in their individual communities. I am working to make sure Head Start programs have the funding they need to continue to serve struggling families and kids during this pandemic.”

A grant of $1,171,091 was awarded to the White Mountain Apache Tribe to support the development and expansion of the tribe’s Head Start programs.

This year, O’Halleran joined a group of colleagues on a letter to Congressional leadership to urge full funding for Head Start programs as child care providers adapt to COVID-19 and work to continue serving vulnerable families.
