O’Halleran on the Impact of a Government Shutdown in Arizona

Press Release

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran released the following statement regarding the impact of a government shutdown on communities across Arizona’s First Congressional District.

“The President's statement regarding a politically motivated government shutdown today is completely irresponsible,” said Rep. O’Halleran. “Such a shutdown would have a disastrous impact on hardworking families, veterans, and seniors. In addition, shuttering our national parks and monuments would hurt local economies that rely on tourism. It is long past time for Congress to create a comprehensive process that enables us to pass an annual budget that invests in our country and moves us forward. President Trump should show leadership by working to forge bipartisan consensus in Washington.”

The government shutdown in 2013 cost our economy an estimated $24 billion, according to Standard and Poor’s Ratings Services. In addition, Rep. O’Halleran introduced the Government Shutdown Accountability and Economic Report Act of 2017 to withhold Congressional pay during a government shutdown and require daily reports on the impact and cost of the shutdown on the economy.
