WASHINGTON—Today, following reports that Iran launched military attacks on two airbases in Iraq housing American troops in response to the United States killing of terrorist Qasem Soleimani, and after listening to President Trump’s remarks on the developing situation, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) issued the following statement:

“I am relieved to hear that, as of now, there have been no American casualties as a result of this Iranian retaliation operation. We must continue to safeguard American forces stationed in the region, our international military bases, and our allies abroad.

“When it comes to our relationship with Iran, the United States must have a forward-looking strategy that defends our homeland and outlines a clear pathway forward. Congress and the administration should work together to come to an agreement on a comprehensive national security strategy that prevents the resurgence of ISIS and continues to root out radicalized terrorists in the region, state-sponsored terrorism, and any and all threats posed by Iran and its proxies. This includes a distinct strategy for any potential proportionate responses to future Iranian actions.

“No American wants to see an escalation of force or a large-scale military conflict. We must focus on deescalation, maintaining our partnership with the Iraqi government, and precise, diplomatic initiatives that will lead to a peaceful, non-nuclear Iran.

“I will continue to closely monitor this situation as our intelligence unveils new developments, thinking always of our brave men and women in uniform and their families.”
