O'Halleran Applauds NPS Tribal Heritage Grant to Hualapai Tribe in Arizona

September 14, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Tom O'Halleran (AZ-01) congratulated the Hualapai Tribe for receiving a Tribal Heritage Grant from the National Park Service. The $43,200 award will allow the tribe to preserve their cultural heritage, including traditional arts, skills, education, and ceremonies.

"The history of the Hualapai Tribe, and every tribe and nation across Indian Country, is steeped in cultural and spiritual significance. Preserving and protecting that history, along with the ceremonies and practices, will allow it to live on in future generations of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiian Organizations," said Rep. O'Halleran. "The Tribal Heritage Grant, which I voted to fund, has supported tribes and nations across the country for decades. I am pleased to see these funds supporting Arizona communities and the heritage of the Hualapai Tribe."

Projects funded by these grants will:

  • Locate and identify cultural resources
  • Preserve historic properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places
  • Support comprehensive preservation planning
  • Preserve oral history and cultural traditions
  • Provide training for building a historic preservation center
  • Support cultural and historic preservation interpretation and education

Congress appropriates funding for the Tribal Heritage Grant Program through the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). The HPF uses revenue from federal oil leases on the Outer Continental Shelf to provide assistance for a broad range of preservation projects.
