O'Halleran Calls for Improvements to Iran Nuclear Deal
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. O’Halleran called on President Trump to recertify the Iran Nuclear Deal and work with Congress and international allies to strengthen the flawed pact preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
“Protecting the safety and security of our families should be the number one priority for this Congress and Administration, and to do so, we need to ensure rogue actors do not have the capability or resources to develop nuclear weaponry. President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Agreement with scant evidence of nuclear development in Iran threatens our standing with allies and could compromise our national security.
“This nuclear agreement was not without flaws and it did little to curb terrorist activity. I echo many of the concerns of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle when I say that we should be focused on fixing the underlying problems and strengthening international support, not reflexively ending our involvement in the pact.
“We cannot allow Iran to develop long-range nuclear missiles, continue to fund terrorism, and destabilize governments throughout the Middle East. These actions should not go unchecked. The Administration and Congress must work with allies to establish sanctions and work to limit Iran’s extremist activities.
“I urge President Trump to listen to the bipartisan consensus in Congress and recertify the Iran Nuclear Deal while we work with our allies to strengthen it.”
