O'Halleran Condemns Assad Regime's Use of Chemical Weapons
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) condemned the actions of the Syrian government and President Bashar al-Assad following the use of chemical weapons on innocent civilians earlier this week. He also called for leadership and action by both the Trump Administration and Congress.
“The use of chemical weapons against innocent children and families is another unconscionable display of human rights violations by the Assad regime in Syria and its enablers, including Russia and Iran. Assad’s willingness to use chemical weapons against his own people has been a known threat to the region for over a year, with multiple attacks against civilians occurring – yet the Administration has failed to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy in response. The lack of a clear policy plan has ceded critical territory to our adversaries and resulted in thousands of innocent deaths.
“The U.S. must work with the international community to develop a whole-of-government approach to end the death and destruction perpetuated by the Assad regime and any government or organization that wishes to help them. The President has a responsibility to consult Congress on any proposed strategy to deescalate dangerous tensions in the region and protect our allies. We, as a nation, have a moral obligation to prevent any type of chemical, biological, or nuclear attack in any part of the world."
