O'Halleran Leads Letter Calling on AG Brnovich to Protect Arizonans with Pre-existing Conditions
VILLAGE OF OAK CREEK – Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) sent a letter, signed by Reps. Raúl Grijalva (AZ-03), Ruben Gallego (AZ-07), and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-09), urging Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich to drop a lawsuit that would nullify, if successful, pre-existing condition protections for Arizonans.
“According to leaders in the Republican Party, no one wants to take away the health coverage of the 133 million Americans under 65 with pre-existing conditions, but unfortunately, the misguided lawsuit AG Brnovich has joined will do just that,” said Rep. O’Halleran. “More than 2.8 million Arizonans are at risk if this lawsuit is successful. No one believes our health care system is perfect, but scrapping protections for millions of Americans is not the right way to fix the problem. We must work on a bipartisan solution that stabilizes the health insurance market and reins in skyrocketing premiums for working families.”
According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, 75 percent of Americans say it is very important prevent insurance companies from denying coverage based on a person’s medical history. In Arizona, it is estimated nearly 3 million individuals live with pre-existing conditions.
In the letter, the lawmakers state, “Allowing discrimination based on pre-existing conditions will be devastating to those living with chronic health challenges like asthma, diabetes, or cancer, and drive up costs for working families, small businesses, and entrepreneurs. Given that national Republican leadership is claiming to defend pre-existing conditions protections, will you drop your lawsuit which, if successful, would nullify these protections?”
