O'Halleran: National emergency declaration "puts our servicemembers and our nation at a greater risk"
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) called on the president to reverse his decision to divert resources from the Department of Defense and law enforcement programs to fund a border wall.
“As a former member of the House Armed Services Committee, we worked hard to ensure our military remains strong by investing in much-needed infrastructure improvements. President Trump’s decision to divert these funds puts our servicemembers and our nation at a greater risk," O'Halleran said. "We must act to secure our border, but this is not the way it should be done. We should put aside partisanship and work together to fund 21st century border security technology and fill the thousands of border patrol vacancies at our borders. I am ready to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to protect our communities, and I encourage President Trump to work with us, not against us.”
Recent reports detail President Trump’s plan to shift $3.5 billion from the Pentagon’s military construction fund, $2.5 billion from the Pentagon’s drug interdiction initiative, and $600 million from the Department of Treasury’s drug forfeiture program.
O’Halleran serves as the Co-Chair of the House Blue Dog Coalition.
