Rep. O’Halleran Calls Budget Proposal Short-sighted, Irresponsible
Today, Congressman Tom O’Halleran expressed his concern about the President’s most recent budget proposal and the impact it will have on Arizona’s hardworking families and rural communities.
“The Trump Administration’s budget proposal represents a significant step backwards for our country,” said Rep. O’Halleran. “This budget disproportionately impacts those who can least afford it. It will devastate rural economies and put critical programs on the chopping block.”
Included in the budget proposal is more than $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid funding, a move that will affect millions of families, seniors, and veterans across the country. In Arizona, more than 1.7 million people, 45,000 of which are veterans, rely on Medicaid. These proposed cuts would have an immediate impact on Arizona’s rural health care system.
In addition, cuts are proposed to:
- Infrastructure and rural economic development
- Job-creating investments
- Lifesaving cancer and medical research
- Job training and student debt relief
- Critical programs for veterans
“This budget does not reflect our shared values as a nation built on opportunity and hard work,” said Rep. O’Halleran. “These cuts to programs on which millions rely are short-sighted and irresponsible. We must have a bipartisan and transparent process that produces a comprehensive budget that moves our country forward and invests in the future.”
