Sedona, AZ – Following the recent firing of FBI Director James Comey, Congressman Tom O’Halleran renewed his calls for an independent investigation into Russian involvement in our electoral process.

“We need to seek the truth—fearlessly and without prejudgment—about how Russia impacted the 2016 election,” Rep. O’Halleran said.  “I continue to support the work of our dedicated FBI agents.  Now more than ever, though, we must do all we can to guarantee impartiality in the wake of the firing of James Comey.

“I join my colleagues from both parties, and reiterate my prior statements, in calling for an independent select commission to continue any investigation of Russian influence on the election and President Trump’s campaign associates. We should also consider whether additional measures are needed to allow the FBI to perform its work without the potential for undue political pressure. The investigation should have appropriate procedures, staffing, and funding.

“During my years as a police investigator, I understood the importance of having the ability to conduct independent investigations, free from outside pressures and influence,” continued Rep. O’Halleran. “This should not be a partisan issue. An independent process allows us to preserve our democracy and restore faith in our government. It is crucial.”

President Trump fired James Comey as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation yesterday. The firing came during an ongoing investigation into the connection between the Russian government’s influence on the 2016 election and members of President Donald Trump’s campaign and official staff.
